2Close HVAC registers. Limit further circulation of soot through the duct system.
3Photograph the soot webs. Ceiling corners, curtains, electronics — document before anyone touches anything.

✗Don't wipe walls with water or all-purpose cleaner. Oil-based soot smears instantly and permanently stains paint. Dry-cleaning sponges only — and technique matters.
✗Don't vacuum with a household vacuum. Standard filters exhaust fine soot right back into the air.

What exactly is a puff back?

An oil burner misfire — unburned fuel ignites in the chamber and 'puffs' oily soot through the exhaust and duct system. One event can film an entire house in minutes, and Long Island's oil-heat housing stock makes it a local specialty of ours.

Why is there black webbing in my ceiling corners?

Those 'soot webs' are charged soot particles chaining together — a puff back signature. They smear badly if brushed. Leave them for proper removal.

Is puff back cleanup covered by insurance?

Almost always, yes — it's a sudden and accidental event under most homeowner policies. The fight is usually over scope: carriers want to pay for one room, and soot went everywhere. We document room by room.

Can I clean it myself?

We'll be straight with you: light soot on a few hard surfaces, maybe. But oil soot smears with normal cleaners, stains paint permanently, and hides in ducts and fabrics. Most DIY attempts increase the final cost.
