Puff Back Cleanup — Long Island's Messiest Loss

With so many Long Island homes on oil heat, we see it every winter: the burner misfires, and within hours an oily soot film coats walls, ceilings, curtains — every room. It looks like dust. It cleans like tar. This is specialist work, and it's usually covered by insurance.

Before our crew arrives

Do this right now — and don't do this.

🏭 Do this now

  1. 1Shut down the burner. Turn the furnace off and leave it off until a heating tech inspects it.
  2. 2Close HVAC registers. Limit further circulation of soot through the duct system.
  3. 3Photograph the soot webs. Ceiling corners, curtains, electronics — document before anyone touches anything.

🚫 Never do this

  1. Don't wipe walls with water or all-purpose cleaner. Oil-based soot smears instantly and permanently stains paint. Dry-cleaning sponges only — and technique matters.
  2. Don't vacuum with a household vacuum. Standard filters exhaust fine soot right back into the air.
  3. Don't repaint over soot. Paint won't bond to oily residue and the odor bleeds through. Surfaces must be cleaned and sealed first.

Insurance, translated

What your policy typically covers here.

Typically covered

  • Puff backs are a sudden, accidental event — covered by most NY homeowner policies
  • Whole-home cleaning, contents, HVAC decontamination, and repainting where soot damaged finishes

Watch-outs

  • Carriers sometimes try to scope only the 'furnace room' — soot physics says otherwise, and our room-by-room documentation proves it
  • The burner repair itself is maintenance (your heating tech), separate from the cleanup claim

Puff back claims get underscoped constantly. Our job is documenting every affected room so the claim matches the actual mess. Every policy differs — this is orientation, not a coverage decision; your policy language and adjuster determine final coverage.

How it goes

Days 2–4

Ducts & contents

HVAC decontaminated; contents cleaned or packed out for processing.

Final

Deodorize & seal

Fuel-oil odor eliminated, surfaces sealed and ready for paint where needed.

Common questions

Puff Back Cleanup — answered honestly.

What exactly is a puff back?

An oil burner misfire — unburned fuel ignites in the chamber and 'puffs' oily soot through the exhaust and duct system. One event can film an entire house in minutes, and Long Island's oil-heat housing stock makes it a local specialty of ours.

Why is there black webbing in my ceiling corners?

Those 'soot webs' are charged soot particles chaining together — a puff back signature. They smear badly if brushed. Leave them for proper removal.

Is puff back cleanup covered by insurance?

Almost always, yes — it's a sudden and accidental event under most homeowner policies. The fight is usually over scope: carriers want to pay for one room, and soot went everywhere. We document room by room.

Can I clean it myself?

We'll be straight with you: light soot on a few hard surfaces, maybe. But oil soot smears with normal cleaners, stains paint permanently, and hides in ducts and fabrics. Most DIY attempts increase the final cost.

Do I also need my furnace fixed?

Yes — by a heating technician, before the system runs again. That repair is separate from the cleanup claim; we'll coordinate timing with your tech so cleaning isn't undone.
